"He asked me bluntly whether I'll run for president, and I told him straight: I've chose to run and will make a formal announcement next week".

Gabbard was born in American Samoa to a Catholic father, Hawaii State Senator Mike Gabbard, and her mother, Carol Porter Gabbard, is of Caucasian descent who professes Hinduism.

Gabbard said in a CNN interview slated to air Saturday night that she will be formally announcing her candidacy within the next week.

Gabbard, who was elected to Hawaii state legislature when she was only 21, is the youngest person running for the presidency so far for 2020.

According to Gabbard, 37, her campaign would primarily focus on "the issue of war and peace".

Several inches of snow possible this weekend in northeast Kansas

"I'm thinking through how I can best be of service and I'll make my decision based on that", she said.

"There are a lot of challenges that are facing the American people that I'm concerned about and that I want to help solve", Ms Gabbard told CNN, listing health care access, criminal justice reform and climate change as key platform issues.

Since entering national politics in 2012-when she became the first Hindu elected to Congress-she has been an outspoken critic of the bipartisan consensus on foreign policy. She quit the DNC in early 2016 to endorse Sen.

California senator Kamala Harris, New Jersey senator Cory Booker and Vermont senator Bernie Sanders are all weighing their own presidential bids and are expected to announce decisions in the upcoming weeks.

She drew controversy when she met with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in 2017 amidst the brutal civil war there. Gabbard supported legislation that made it more hard for Syrian refugees to enter the U.S.

The vaccine takes one to two weeks to start working. "We were totally in shock", his father, Wesley Kequahtooway, told CTV News. That has put an incredible strain on emergency units across the country, including the one at Montreal Children's Hospital.

Gabbard has also made headlines for referring to President Trump as "Saudi Arabia's b--", after the president argued for the importance of a strong U.S-Saudi relationship amid calls for him to take a tougher stance on the kingdom in response to the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi.

Rumors of her run for president have circulated in recent months. She said "whoever is found responsible" must be held accountable and talked about "if" Assad is indeed guilty.

Gabbard's spat with Hirono is just the latest incidence of her alienation from establishment Democrats.

Gabbard was deployed to Iraq in 2005, and she maintains her role as a member of the Hawaii National Guard. Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Rep. Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke (D-TX) are also reportedly considering running for president.
