As CNN first reported, the Federal Bureau of Investigation opened the Trump probe, in the hectic days after the President fired Comey, after considering various options for dealing with the firing. They also sought to determine whether the president was knowingly working for Russian Federation.

The Times reported Friday that the probe looking into whether Trump was working for Russian Federation was later folded into Mueller's investigation. Investigators have examined key episodes such as Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey and his fury over the recusal from the investigation of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
