  • UN urges international inquiry on Khashoggi killing

But two key senators from Trump's own Republican party said Tuesday that a briefing by the CIA's director had strengthened their conviction that Prince Mohammed directed the murder.

The ambassador is the brother of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whose alleged role in ordering the murder is at the heart of a burning controversy in the USA and across the world. "And I think if the Senate can make that statement, it puts us on a new path to trying to have a relationship with Saudi Arabia that is beneficial and sustainable".

However, a U.S. official told NBC that Khalid is not expected to be expelled from the country and would continue on as ambassador.

Khalid had flown back to Saudi Arabia shortly after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in early October, just as global outrage and pressure was mounting on Saudi leaders over the killing.

Trudeau met the Saudi prince while at the G20 summit in Argentina. They did so against the advice of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who said US involvement in the Yemen conflict is central to the Trump administration's broader goal of containing Iranian influence in the Middle East.

The Saudi columnist for The Washington Post, Jamal Khashoggi, was murdered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October, 2018. Human rights groups say the war is wreaking havoc on the country and subjecting civilians to indiscriminate bombing.

At the same time, as stated by Republican Senator Bob Corker, the jury would have found him guilty after a 30-minute hearing.

Corker said it would be "difficult" to come up with legislation that could pass the Senate. "I'm not going to blow past this", he said.

US, China put brakes on trade dispute with cease-fire
On Monday, China's ministry of foreign affairs said the Chinese and US presidents had agreed to work towards removing all tariffs. President Donald Trump announced that China will lower or eliminate their tariffs on USA vehicle imports.

Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin said the briefing with Haspel "clearly went in to an evaluation of the intelligence" and was much more informative than the session with Mattis and Pompeo.

It was unclear whether Khalid knew that Khashoggi would be killed, the United States newspaper said, but he made the call at the discretion of his brother, MBS. He said finding a compromise will be hard because some lawmakers don't want to tie Yemen to the Khashoggi killing. Obviously that's a huge sign of progress, but an even more important takeaway is the fact that these senators say they feel purposefully mislead by a Republican administration, and have made a vote against its interests. "MBS, the crown prince, is a wrecking ball".

Despite these heavy suspicions, the administration of President Donald Trump has sought to distance the Saudi leadership from the affair and insisted there is no direct proof Prince Mohammed ordered the killing.
