In federal court on Monday, Cohen pleaded guilty to making false statements to Congress in 2017 in relation to Trump's efforts to build a Trump Tower hotel in Moscow.
The charges were brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the presidential election, not the prosecutors in NY who handled Cohen's previous guilty plea in August to other federal charges involving his taxi businesses, bank fraud and his campaign work for Trump. He further accused Cohen of fabricating "stories to get a GREAT & ALREADY reduced deal for himself".
Trump praised Stone in a Monday tweet, in which he echoed Corsi's accusation that Mueller is using plea deals in an attempt to compel false testimony against the president.
The most recent development in the Mueller investigation came last week when former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen pled guilty to lying to authorities about his contact with Russian Federation and a Trump Tower construction project in Moscow.
Stone pledged his loyalty to the president during an interview with ABC's This Week on Sunday, stating that there would be "no circumstance" in which he would testify against Trump.
Before last week, Trump had repeatedly said he had no business dealings in Russian Federation, tweeting in July 2016, "For the record, I have ZERO investments in Russian Federation", and telling reporters in January 2017 that he had no deals there because he had "stayed away".
The tweet about Stone drew immediate criticism from several lawyers, who said it amounted to witness tampering.
Trump's comments about Cohen contrasted with his expressions of sympathy for former associates caught in the web of Mueller's investigation, including former 2016 campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who faces sentencing after being convicted of tax and bank fraud charges.
George Conway, husband of White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, soon suggested that Trump's tweet might be considered witness tampering.
"Robert Mueller... and his out of control band of Angry Democrats, don't want the truth, they only want lies".
The president then said it's nice to know that some people still have guts. The truth is very bad for their mission!'
