  • Ex-Dallas Cop Who Killed Man in ‘Mistaken Apartment’ Case Indicted for Murder

A Dallas County grand jury recently indicted former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger on murder charges following the shooting death of 26-year-old Botham Jean.

In the affidavit, Guyger said that the door was "slightly ajar" and that the interior was dark when she entered, so she was unable to see that it was the wrong apartment. Jean, a 26-year-old native of the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia, attended college in Arkansas and had been working in Dallas for accounting and consulting firm PwC.

Johnson also repeatedly pointed out that it was the Texas Rangers" call, as the agency leading the investigation into the shooting, to file the manslaughter charge at the time of Guyger's arrest, even though she said her office believed it was a murder case "all along'.

"He didn't deserve it, he was seated in his own apartment".

In a news conference Friday, Johnson denied she had waited too long to seek a murder charge against Guyger.

"I'm looking forward to the powers that be to come up with the answers to make me more satisfied that they are doing what is in the best interest of getting justice for Botham", Allison Jean said on September 10.

Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger has been indicted on a murder charge in the killing of her black unarmed neighbor in his own apartment. She told police she thought she was in her own apartment. When she opened the door, she saw the interior was nearly completely dark, according to the affidavit. She then drew her weapon and fired twice, the affidavit said.

Jean's family filed a lawsuit against the City of Dallas and its police department in late October.

The federal suit argues Ms Guyger used excessive force in the shooting and contends the department did not give her adequate training.

The circumstances of the shooting sparked outrage and led many to question Guyger's account.

"Every person in the Dallas Police Department continues to feel anguish about this hard and tragic event that occurred on September 6, 2018", Hall said.

She turned herself in Friday and posted a $200,000 bond. She was released after posting bond.

If convicted, Guyger could face a sentence of up to a life in prison.

Guyger had not yet entered a plea on her misdemeanor charge. She told investigators she thought the man was a burglar. "We were determined to present to the grand jury all of the facts and explain to them the law".

Although she was arrested for manslaughter, the grand jury had the ability to keep that charge, change it to murder or not charge her at all.

Lee Merritt, one of the attorneys for Jean's family, cast doubt on Guyger's narrative. "We are focused on seeing this case through (to) a proper conviction and through an appropriate sentencing".

Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall emailed a statement to CBS 11 News that said in part, "Every person in the Dallas Police Department continues to feel anguish about this hard and tragic event that occurred on September 6, 2018". She described it as a "tragic event" and asked people to pray for Jean's family.
