Saudi columnist and government critic Jamal Khashoggi was strangled to death as soon as he entered Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul in a premeditated murder, the city's chief prosecutor said in a statement.

The killing of Khashoggi has put into focus the West's close relationship with Saudi Arabia - a major arms buyer and lynchpin of Washington's regional plans to contain Iran.

Turkish officials have said from the beginning that Khashoggi was killed with premeditation and his body was dismembered by a team of Saudi operatives dispatched from Riyadh.

France's foreign minister cast doubt on Saudi Arabia's investigation into the death of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Wednesday, saying "not enough" was being done to find those responsible for his murder.

The country is also asking Saudi Arabia to help locate Khashoggi's body, which still has not been found. Erdogan said Riyadh must disclose the identity of an alleged local collaborator said to have been involved in disposing Khashoggi's body.

Turkey says. the Saudi journalist who was murdered in Istanbul was immediately strangled as he entered the Saudi consulate.

Saudi officials shifted their story last week after evidence from Turkey revealed that the killing was in fact premeditated.

U.S. President Donald Trump on October 23 denounced Saudi handling of the death of Khashoggi, calling it the "worst cover-up ever" and "a total fiasco".

The statement was the first public confirmation by a Turkish official that Khashoggi was strangled and mutilated after he entered the Saudi Consulate on October 2. He also held a second meeting with Fidan and visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

After weeks of denying any knowledge of his whereabouts, Saudi officials admitted that Khashoggi was killed in a fist fight inside the consulate building.

Attorney General Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb met Mr Fidan twice, visited the consulate and spoke with Turkey's intelligence agency during his visit to Istanbul this week.

Saudi state media released pictures taken of Mr Khashoggi's son Salah bin Jamal Khashoggi meeting and shaking hands with the crown prince.

Under mounting global pressure, Saudi Arabia has changed its narrative about Khashoggi's killing several times, and has recently acknowledging that Turkish evidence shows it was premeditated.
