Ruth Bader Ginsburg Taken to DC Hospital After Fall at Court

  • Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg taken to hospital after fall

She went to hospital "after experiencing discomfort overnight", the court said. Doctors at George Washington University Hospital found three broken ribs on her left side. This week's incident was not the first time Ginsburg has suffered an injury as a result of a fall - in June 2012, she fell at home and cracked two ribs. She also battled cancer twice and got a stent in 2014 to open a blocked artery.

Ginsburg was not present at Thursday's investiture of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, Trump's appointee confirmed last month that gave the court a solid 5-4 conservative majority. "Um, God take me instead?" said another.

In an attempt to make light of the situation, supporters joked the Democrats needed to wrap the justice in bubble wrap in an attempt to keep her healthy for the next two years.

"If Ruth Bader Ginsburg needs any of my bones or internal organs I don't need mine", she joked.

The Supreme Court Office of Public Information said Thursday that updates on Ginsburg's condition would be released as they become available.

When she battled colon cancer in 1999, Ginsburg did not miss a single day on the bench, despite chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

"Ginsburg has had a series of health problems", reports AP.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told reporters Thursday that Trump and others at the White House are wishing Ginsburg a full and speedy recovery.

Although small in stature, Ginsburg has developed an out-sized reputation as an outspoken justice and the leader of the court's liberal wing.
