Boeing's bulletin related only to the 737 MAX, the latest version of the world's most-sold family of aircraft, which has been in service for just over a year.

The acting administrator of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Dan Elwell, said the FAA and NTSB had teams of experts in Indonesia at the government's request.

The Wall Street Journal reported that United States aviation regulators also meant to issue safety warnings about potentially suspect flight-control software.

Authorities previously confirmed that the pilots flying the same plane on another route the day before the crash had experienced technical issues.

National Transportation Safety Committee chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono said the damaged indicator was discovered after the data had been downloaded from the Boeing 787-MAX 8's data recorder that was recovered from the sea. The committee said the pilots were dealing with an erroneous airspeed indication.

Boeing will also warn pilots to follow an existing procedure to handle the problem.

He said the pilot had landed the plane safely on that occasion.

The cockpit voice recorder could offer crucial clues, he said, noting that besides conversations inside the cockpit, it could also contain other valuable information, such as warning sounds. In particular, it may help explain why the crew asked to return to base minutes into the journey.

"I want Mr. Rusdi Kirana and his team to pay attention", he said. Audio recorded in the cockpit of each flight showed that the pilots were confused by conflicting instrument reports.

Both flights crashed shortly after takeoff.

The plane's altitude was mostly about 5,000 feet (1,524 meters), but rose and fell repeatedly within a range of a few hundred feet, according to flight-tracking data from FlightRadar24. The flight was then grounded for 12 hours.

He added that the broken sensor from the Bali-Jakarta flight would be sent to the manufacturer in Chicago for further examination.

With corrections, the difference between the two can be used to calculate airspeed. If a plane isn't in the right position in the air, the aerodynamics will be completely thrown off.

Even with modern Global Positioning System tracking, planes need to calculate their precise speed through the air.

While modern jetliners primarily operate on autopilot, the computerized system can disengage when airspeed indicators malfunction, forcing pilots to manually fly the aircraft.

Aboulafia, the vice president of analysis at the consulting firm Teal Group, argues that it's more important to emphasize how pilots react to failures such as incorrect sensor readings than the failures themselves.

Divers have been retrieving bodies for days, and the search efforts continue. Strong underwater currents in the Java Sea off Jakarta and a muddy seabed have complicated a week-long hunt that's involved dozens of ships and hundreds of specialist personnel.

A search operation soon found the debris of the plane in the waters off Tanjung Pakis in Karawang, about 70 kilometers east of Jakarta.

Singapore Airlines' regional carrier SilkAir is the only airline operating the 737 Max 8 aircraft in Australia.

At a meeting on Monday, to address the grieving families of the victims, Tjahjono said that the plane did not explode mid-air and was intact when it plunged into the sea, with its engine's turbines running at high speed.
