  • US President Donald Trump and Saudi Deputy Crown Prince and Minister of Defense Mohammed bin Salman meet at the White House in Washington US

The meetings came shortly after The Washington Post revealed in a report earlier in the day that Netanyahu has asked US President Donald Trump to continue supporting MBS despite accusations that he ordered a hit job on anti-Riyadh journalist Jamal Khashoggi last month.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman held a rare meeting with American evangelical Christians as the conservative kingdom seeks to open up more to the world and fix an image of religious intolerance.

Saudi Arabia has denied the reports in the Washington Post and New York Times.

The Saudis have given a shifting account of what happened to Khashoggi on October 2. The president, however, "will demand accountability for those who were involved in the commission of this heinous crime", Pompeo stressed Thursday.

"In accordance with plans made in advance, the victim, Jamal Khashoggi, was strangled to death immediately after entering the consulate-general of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul on 2 October, 2018 for marriage formalities", chief prosecutor Irfan Fidan said.

Rogue killers or state murder?

Besides providing "enormous opportunities" for American "wealth generation", the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia remains a "solid partner" in the U.S. effort to "change" Iran's behavior, Pompeo said. Turkey wants the suspects to be extradited.

After Saudi Arabia admitted that Khashoggi was killed in its Istanbul consulate, five high-ranking officials were dismissed, including bin Salman's media chief and the deputy head of the Saudi intelligence service.

Saudi Arabia said they will face justice in the kingdom.

One Israeli official said, "Saudi Arabia is a very important state in the region, and Israel and other nations have a major interest in ensuring its continued stability". However, he also said he was unwilling to sacrifice lucrative arms deals with the country.

"It'll take us probably a handful more weeks before we have enough evidence to actually put those sanctions in place, but I think we'll be able to get there", Pompeo said.

"Jamal Khashoggi was not a risky person in any way possible".

On Wednesday, France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Khashoggi's death was a "crime" and "odious".

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt also said it was an appalling act, adding that it had "possibly" given the United States and the UK a chance to put new pressure on Saudi Arabia over other issues.
