  • An unknown number of homes and buildings in Paradise have been destroyed by the Camp Fire

In Southern California there are now two fires in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties threatening structures and forcing evacuations.

Cal Fire has used aircraft minimally because high winds diminish their effectiveness in dropping retardant, Pimlott explained during Friday morning's press conference.

Malibu, known as the home of many Hollywood stars, has about 13,000 residents and lies along 21 miles of coast at the southern foot of the mountain range.

Flames from the unchecked, 20 000-acre (8 100-hectare) Camp Fire were being driven westward by 35-mile-per hour (56 km-per-hour) winds, fire officials said.

The Ventura County fire department said Friday that 75,000 homes were ordered evacuated in the two adjoining counties west of Los Angeles. Santa Monica Mountain communities between there and the ocean were put under mandatory evacuation at 7 a.m., L.A. County Fire stated.

Midterm elections are typically hard for the party in power, and GOP incumbents were on defense in races across the country. As of Wednesday, voters were on track to send at least 100 women to the House, surpassing the previous record of 84.

At least five people have died in wildfires spreading across California that have destroyed thousands of structures and sent people fleeing as towns and forests throughout the state burn.

Update: All of Malibu went under an evacuation order on Friday afternoon. Also shut down were the schools of the Conejo Valley School District, headquartered in Thousand Oaks, and the Los Angeles Unified School District's Topanga Elementary Charter School.

Ventura and Los Angeles county agencies have a unified command of the incident, in addition to CalFire.

The blaze threatened several communities and institutions including the Point Mugu Naval Base and California State University, Channel Islands campus, according to authorities.

Also burning in Ventura County was the Hill Fire, which grew to 10,000 acres by Thursday night, officials said. By mid-morning Friday it had burned over 14,000 acres and an untold number of homes.

One fire that broke out near the northeast corner of Los Angeles has roared westward, jumped USA 101 in the Calabasas area and is surging up the Santa Monica Mountains.

"Please, please, please if you are asked to voluntarily leave the area, please do", Ventura County fire Capt. Scott Dettore told CNN affiliate KTLA on Friday morning.

"Imminent threat!" the department said in its warning. Residents struggling to cope with that tragedy are now confronted with another disaster, the Los Angeles Times reported. Some structures have already been destroyed, Cal Fire reported. The Hill Fire started not far from the Thousand Oaks bar where 12 people were killed in a mass shooting.
