Relatives numbed by grief provided samples for DNA tests to help identify victims of the Lion Air plane crash that killed 189 people in Indonesia, as accounts emerged Tuesday of problems on the jet's previous flight including rapid descents that terrified passengers.

Authorities are looking for the plane's wreckage and "black boxes", which could hold valuable clues as to why the flight crashed.

As the plane crashed in shallow water, recovering the black boxes should be easier than with deepwater crashes such as AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501 in 2014 and Air France flight 447 in 2009, said Greg Waldron, managing editor of Flightglobal Asia, an industry publication.

Herson said Reuters wrongly quoted him as saying the Lion Air plane had sought to return to Bali.

Indonesia's transport safety panel pledged to move as quickly as possible to download the data, which can take as little as two hours, although analysing it might require several weeks.

Navy divers continue recovery operations of the Lion Air jet that crashed into the sea on Monday in the waters of Tanjung Karawang, Indonesia, Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018.

The plane flew erratically and its air speed readings were unreliable.

The nearly new Boeing 737 MAX 8 went down in the Java Sea shortly after taking off from Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Monday morning with 189 passengers and crew on board. The voice recorder also provides valuable information - not only the cockpit crew's voices but engine sounds, instrumentation warnings and other audio that investigators can interpret.

Mr Tjahjanto said search teams have location coordinates for what they believe is the crash site, but still need to confirm it is the fuselage.

Lion Air Group Managing Director Daniel Putut said the airline had "many questions" for the Chicago-based company and they would discuss the delivery of remaining aircraft 737-MAX models, Indonesian news website tirto.id reported.

Navy divers on Thursday pulled from the muddy seabed the "crash-survivable memory unit" of one black box, raising hopes its stored data will show what went wrong on flight JT610, whose pilot had received permission to turn back before the crash. Investigators say that is also indicated by the search and rescue effort finding many body parts rather than intact victims.

In August 2015, a commercial passenger aircraft operated by Indonesian carrier Trigana crashed in Papua due to bad weather, killing all 54 people on board.

The U.S. and the European Union had banned Indonesian aircraft from their skies in 2007 after a string of accidents.

Copies of several Lion Air technical documents have been circulating on social media, but they could not be immediately confirmed as authentic and the carrier did not return calls seeking comment. It has been expanding aggressively in Southeast Asia, a fast- growing region of more than 600 million people.
