  • Get prepared now for Hurricane Michael

At 11 a.m. Tuesday, Michael was about 360 miles south of Panama City, moving north-northwestward at 12 mph. The system has now graduated to Category 2 hurricane status and is expected to reach Category 3 (with winds in excess of 110 mph) when it makes its USA mainland landfall on Wednesday afternoon.

Michael is expected to reach major hurricane status on Wednesday as it approaches a landfall between Apalachicola and Pensacola, with 125 miles per hour winds, the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday in its 11 a.m. update.

Although Michael will produce heavy rain showers, the storm's accelerating forward movement should allow those downpours to move through and not over-saturate most areas. Larger surf is expected Tuesday, Malphurs said, and access ramps are expected to be closed to driving all morning and into the early afternoon. The agency said it is possible the storm could strengthen further before it makes landfall later Wednesday.

"This has been different from a lot of the storms we've seen since I've been governor", said Gov. Rick Scott.

Forecasters said parts of Florida's marshy, lightly populated Big Bend area could see up to 3.7 metres of storm surge. The storm could inundate more than one-fourth of that coast's dunes, causing flooding behind the protective dune line, said Kara Doran, leader of the USGS Coastal Change Hazards Storm Team.

Michael's maximum sustained winds had reached 70 miles per hour, it said. "Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions".

The NHC said in a tweet that a "life-threatening" storm surge and flash flooding was likely in areas of the Florida Panhandle and described the storm as "dangerous".

US Rep. Neal Dunn, whose district includes Panama City, urged people under evacuation orders to get out before tropical-storm-force winds arrived.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km).

Florida State University announced it was closing for the week on Tuesday, along with schools in Leon County, home to the state capital Tallahassee.

Hurricane Michael is expected to hit the Florida panhandle as a major storm on Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 10) - and US weather satellites are busy watching the storm to help meteorologists keep people safe.

Even neighbors in Alabama were bracing.
