India inaugurates world's biggest statue amid tight security

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveils the Statue of Unity in Gujarat on Wednesday. Set against the backdrop of the scenic Sardar Sarovar Dam, the statue is perched on top of the small river island of Sadhu Bet, situated only 3.2km from the Sardar Sarovar Dam.

While campaigning in 2013 to become prime minister, Mr Modi said, "every Indian regrets that Sardar Patel did not become the first prime minister".

A few hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in Gujarat to inaugurate the world's tallest statue-Statue of Unity-at Kevadia Colony in Narmada district, the Gujarat Police on Tuesday evening detained several villagers and activists as a precautionary measure. Iron was collected from all over the country for the statue of Sardar Patel, also known as the Iron Man of India.The statue can withstand severe wind velocity and severe earthquakes.

At 182-metre, the statue is touted as the world's tallest - it is 177 feet higher than China's Spring Temple Buddha, now the world's tallest statue. It was designed by Indian sculptor Ram V Sutar.

Addressing the gathering, Modi said, "This is a project we thought when I was the hief minister of Gujarat".

Mr Modi, who unveiled the statue at a grand inaugural event, said it is "a symbol of India's integrity and resolve".

India on Wednesday inaugurated the world's tallest statue, a $400-million effigy of independence hero Vallabhbhai Patel that towers almost twice the height of New York's Statue of Liberty. Twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty, the figurine is believed to be the tallest statue in the world.

The statue was reportedly built with funds allocated by the Gujarat state government, it has also received support from the federal government and individual contributions.

The Prime Minister will reach Ahmedabad today evening and stay overnight at Raj Bhavan.

A viewing gallery has been created at a height of 135 metres inside the statue to enable tourists to have a view of the dam and nearby mountain ranges.

The monument will have a museum with 40,000 documents, 2,000 photographs and a research center dedicated to Patel's life and work.

Indian authorities hope the statue will attract 15,000 visitors a day to the remote corner of Gujarat, which is about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the nearest city of Vadodora.
