Hurricane Florence delivered a slow-motion assault to the coast of North Carolina early Friday, with catastrophic storm surge and torrential rains that will continue for days.

The NHC said: "Florence is moving toward the west-southwest near 5 miles per hour (8 km/h), and a turn toward the west and northwest is expected today and Sunday".

A new 5-minute video from the space station shows Florence coming ashore in the USA for the first time.

Florence has been downgraded to a tropical storm by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) but authorities warned the danger was far from over, predicting that "life-threatening storm surges and strong winds" would persist through the night.

As of Thursday morning, forecast models showed the storm bringing more rain than originally thought - officials now predict 35 inches of rain will fall in a two-day period as Florence, now a Category 2 storm with 115 miles per hour sustained winds, will stall over Wilmington after making landfall early Friday morning.

NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold also captured Florence making landfall from his spot on the orbiting outpost. The storm is some 645 kilometres wide.

By Friday night the center of the storm had moved to eastern SC, about 15 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

When Florence started battering eastern North Carolina with record rainfall, the rivers began to swell - and combined with high tide, made for unsafe flooding.

According to a study in June, hurricanes and typhoons, on average, appear to be slowing down in part because of human-caused climate change.

It already had, in Beaufort County and its capital city, Washington, where 300 people were rescued from flooded homes.

It is expected to move across parts of south-eastern North Carolina and eastern SC on Friday and Saturday, then head north over the western Carolinas and central Appalachian Mountains early next week, the NHC said.

Florence had been a category three hurricane with 120mph winds as of Thursday, but dropped to a category one hurricane before coming ashore.

Most other beachgoers were long done. "It's been really nice", Nicole Roland said. "You feel like you should have already left". Water kills more people in hurricanes than wind, and he said it will still be an extremely risky storm for rain and storm surge.

New Bern, a city of about 29,000 people, sits on a peninsula between the Neuse and Trent rivers.

Officials said some 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to evacuate, but it's unclear how many did.

North Carolina alone is forecast to get 9.6 trillion gallons, enough to cover the Tar Heel state to a depth of about 10 inches (25 centimeters). Officials in South Carolina's Craven County say conditions are much worse than some residents expected, with almost 500 people calling the local emergency services hotline asking for help.

More than 60 people, including an infant, children and their pets, were rescued from a collapsing hotel in Jacksonville, North Carolina, at the height of the storm, according to the Associated Press. Unsure of what they might find when they return home, the couple went shopping for a recreational vehicle. "You may need to move up to the second story, or to your attic, but WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU".

"This storm is going to continue its violent grind across our state for days", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said.

Zaytoun said he didn't leave his home because he knew he wouldn't have been able to get back to it once the flooding began.

The Steelers took over at their 17, but punted from their 28 after Larry Ogunjobi sacked Roethlisberger for a 10-yard loss. The fourth quarter touchdowns from the Browns came from a Carlos Hyde run and a Tyrod Taylor pass to Josh Gordon .

At least four people have died, but authorities fear the death toll with increase as the storm crawls westward Saturday across SC.
