A powerful typhoon blew through western Japan on Tuesday, causing heavy rain to flood the region's main offshore worldwide airport and high winds to blow a tanker into a connecting bridge, disrupting land and air travel.

More than 175,000 buildings in central and western Japan were without power, according to a tally compiled by Bloomberg News of local utilities.

Dubai-based Emirates on Tuesday announced that it is cancelling all flights to Japan's Osaka Kansai International Airport due to typhoon Jebi.

A 2,591-ton tanker crashed into a bridge connecting the Kansai airport and the opposite shore around 1:30 p.m.

Keita Sakai, a spokesman for the Japan Coast Guard, said that 11 people were on board the Houunmaru but that none had been hurt, according to CNN.

Wind gusts of up to 208 km/h (129 mph) were recorded in one part of Shikoku, with forecasts for gusts as high as 216 km/h (135 mph).

After passing the southern part of Tokushima Prefecture, the typhoon passed near Kobe and moved into the Sea of Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
