"This was not a noble lie", Moss said.

Papadopoulos became the second person to be sentenced to prison in a prosecution brought by special counsel Robert Mueller.

He was also given a £7,300 ($9,500) fine and community service.

"The president of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could", he said.

According to Papadopoulos's account, "Mr. Trump nodded with approval" when he brought up a possible meeting and "deferred to Mr. Sessions who appeared to like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it". Breen argued that those comments influenced Papadopoulos's decision to lie to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

But he said then-senator and now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions "was actually enthusiastic". However, Papadopoulos' mother Kiki told reporters she was satisfied he had received a fair sentence. "It will give him time to think things over".

In the 16-page sentencing memo seeking leniency, his attorneys, Breen, Robert Stanley and Todd Pugh, wrote, "to say George was out of his depth would be a gross understatement". The FBI canceled the meeting when it discovered that Mr. Papadopoulos had sat down for a media interview about the case.

Former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos exits U.S. District Court after his sentencing hearing in Washington on September 7, 2018.

Sessions has claimed he opposed the idea, but Papadopoulos continued to discuss the idea with top campaign officials over the following months. They met through Joseph Mifsud, a mysterious Maltese professor who is believed to be an operative for the Russian government and who attempted during the campaign to introduce George Papadopoulos to people purportedly connected to Russia.

That led the aide to boast about his find in a London bar that was overheard by an Australian diplomat which then was reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

His crime, they said in a court filing last month, "was serious and caused damage to the government's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election".

It's stunning enough to have a former campaign aide to the president of the United States sentenced as part of a foreign counterintelligence investigation.

That comedy film depicted a graphic assassination of Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader, and was denounced by the country. Officials say Park at times traveled to neighboring China and conducted work under a front company called Chosun Expo.

Moss said he had been considering a 30-day prison sentence but said at Friday's hearing that Papadopoulos had shown "genuine remorse". He publicly contradicted, in his court filing, congressional testimony from Sessions about Sessions' response to the Putin-Trump meeting proposal.

"I made a terrible mistake, but I am a good man who is eager for redemption", Papadopoulos said.

While Papadopoulos deserved a harsher punishment than probation, the judge said, he also deserved credit for trying to cooperate and for his apparent contrition.

His attorney and the judge both emphasized how Papadopoulos had put his own ambition and the interests of Trump ahead of the needs of an investigation of national importance.

However, reporting has suggested that he had been more involved with the campaign than the Trump team has let on.
