  • Trump calls on Times to reveal 'coward' behind critical op-ed

Is the anonymous author of a New York Times Trump Op-Ed a traitor or a patriot?

"But for those who are not true Trump believers, I think it is quite likely that these events will reinforce the Democrats' argument (that) a check on the President is a valid and increasingly urgent necessity for the good of the country". Paul Light, a New York University professor and expert on the federal bureaucracy, said about 50 people could have legitimately written the column - probably someone in a political position appointed by Trump. Members of his cabinet rushed to deny authorship in an unedifying spectacle reflecting the depth of suspicion gripping the Trump administration. Those distancing themselves from the column have included the vice-president, Mike Pence, and the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, along with much of Trump's cabinet. But he or she also tries to be reassuring: "It may be cold comfort in this chaotic era, but Americans should know that there are adults in the room".

"Our office is above such amateur acts".

The manifesto followed the release of excerpts from a bombshell book by Watergate reporter Bob Woodward, who portrayed Trump's White House as an out-of-control "crazytown".

President Trump hit back on social media tweeting "TREASON?", and later cast doubt over the piece's authenticity.

"To the writer of the op-ed, you are not protecting this country".

'Idiot,' 'Unhinged,' A 'Sixth-Grader': Aides Fault Trump In Explosive New Book
Some of the striking contents of the book were published by The Washington Post on Tuesday , ahead of its September 11, release. The White House also released a statement attributed to Kelly in which he renewed his denial of ever calling Trump an "idiot".

U.S. President Donald Trump holds a meeting with Republican House and Senate leadership in the Roosevelt Room at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S. September 5, 2018.

Like hundreds of other reporters in Washington, the Times' news staff is trying to find out the writer's name.

"I mean, you look at this awful thing that took place today".

The Times defended the choice to grant anonymity to the author because he or she is "a senior official in the Trump administration whose identity is known to us and whose job would be jeopardized by its disclosure".

When asked if she wrote it, United Nations envoy Nikki Haley responded with a curt "no" on her way to a Security Council meeting.

It is, in other words, the type of story pretty much any editor would dream of having fall into his lap - which is essentially what happened to Times op-ed page editor Jim Dao, who was approached by the unnamed official through an intermediary several days ago.

Florence becomes first major storm of Atlantic hurricane season
The Escambia County Sheriff's office posted on its Facebook page that responding deputies discovered the child had been killed. That's also about 70 miles south of Mobile, Alabama.

The article claimed that Mr Trump's unpredictability meant he could not be trusted with the huge power of the Presidency so the group were deliberately thwarting his whims. At the same time, I can't say whether we would have done it or not, so I don't want to sound churlish.

The official's piece described a "two-track" presidency in which Trump says one thing and his staff consciously does another, citing the president's alleged preference "for autocrats and dictators".

Such an existential threat and a host of other real or only narrowly averted catastrophic errors are now, with the first taste of Woodward's book, coming into sharp focus.

With the New York Times not revealing the source, Donald Trump apparently plans to do the detective work himself, Dworkin reported.

Regarding the writer's identity, he said it "may not be a Republican, it may not be a conservative, it may be a deep state person who has been there for a long time".

In the piece, the writer had claimed: "The root of the problem is the president's amorality".
