  • TROPICAL UPDATE A lot to track in the Atlantic even the Gulf gets in on the action

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service said Tropical Storm Isaac is moving away from Lesser Antilles and eastward into the Caribbean Sea.

The storm is moving at 17 miles per hour to the west and has 60 miles per hour winds. The National Hurricane Center's forecast is for Isaac "to gradually weaken over the next few days, and could degenerate into a tropical wave at anytime".

"Little change in strength is expected before the eye of Florence reaches the coast, with slow weakening expected after the center moves inland or meanders near the coast", the advisory said.

Hurricane Florence's sustained wind speeds have lessened slightly to 105 miles per hour, but the storm is already bringing surges and tropical storm winds to the North Carolina shore, the National Hurricane Center said in an 11 a.m. briefing.

"We do not anticipate experiencing any tropical storm or hurricane force winds, but we could experience rain and will be placed under a flash flood watch", said Governor Kenneth Mapp in a release issued late Thursday.

Hurricane Helene is forecast to weaken over the eastern Atlantic Ocean, and interests in the Azores islands should monitor the storm's progress. This rainfall may cause risky flash flooding, N.H.C. said. "We should also continue to keep our brothers and sisters located in the Carolinas in our thoughts and prayers as Hurricane Florence approaches their area".

Florence is expected to make landfall late Thursday night or early Friday morning, Mountain Time, somewhere between Atlantic Beach, NC and Savannah, GA.

There is increased fear that Florence "will slow considerably or stall, leading to a prolonged and exceptionally heavy and risky rainfall event Friday-Sunday", the NHC said Tuesday.
