"We have ceased handling (the incident) under our normal officer-involved shooting protocol", the chief said, adding that the officer's blood was being tested for drugs and alcohol.

The officer, a five-year veteran on the force, had completed a 12-hour shift and was off-duty when she entered the South Side Flats apartment complex at about 10 p.m. local time.

The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean, a native of the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Jean's mother was incredulous when hearing the news that her son had been gunned down by a police officer in his own home. The officer ran into a man who she didn't recognize and ended up shooting him.

According to Fox News, Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall said the unidentified officer, who is described as a white female, is expected to be charged with manslaughter.

"We have also invited the Texas Rangers to conduct an independent investigation", Hall said.

"We're going to lift up Mr. Jean's life and the lives of others that have been killed by the Dallas police", Fullinwider said in a phone interview Friday.

Journalist and social media activist Shaun King tweeted Friday afternoon about what police said led to the shooting.

The Dallas West Church of Christ, where Jean reportedly worshiped and taught a young adult Bible study every Wednesday, shared a post about his death on Facebook with a short, somber message of its own.

Authorities haven't said how the officer got into Jean's home, or whether his door was open or unlocked. She said she spoke to Jean's sister to express condolences to the family.

Jean, 26, earned a bachelor's degree from the university in 2016, and later went to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas.

"Right now there are more questions than answers", Hall said.

Two women who live on the second floor said they heard shouting before the shots were fired. He later died at the hospital from his injuries. She walked into an apartment, mistaking it for her own, and found a man inside. The apartment complex is just a few blocks from Dallas police headquarters.
