  • North Korea Sony hack: Justice Department to announce hacking charges

A computer programmer has been charged in the U.S. with working for the North Korean state in a series of notorious cyber attacks, including the WannaCry ransomware that crippled the NHS.

"This has nothing to do with the summit and nothing to do with denuclearization", Wilkison said. In 2016, hackers breached the Bangladesh Bank's servers and made off with $81 million. That comedy film depicted a graphic assassination of Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader, and was denounced by the country.

Among the emails released in the hack was an exchange in which Amy Pascal, then co-chairman of the studio, and "The Social Network" producer Scott Rudin joked about what might be then-President Barack Obama's favorite movies, listing "12 Years a Slave" and films by black comedian Kevin Hart.

Another high-profile cyberattack the United States believed to be carried out by North Korea was the illicit transfer of $81m from a Bangladeshi bank in 2016.

"The Conspiracy attempted to and did gain access to several other banks in various countries from 2015 through 2018 using similar methods and watering hole attacks, attempting the theft of at least Dollars 1 billion through such operations", the complaint said.

'Idiot,' 'Unhinged,' A 'Sixth-Grader': Aides Fault Trump In Explosive New Book
Some of the striking contents of the book were published by The Washington Post on Tuesday , ahead of its September 11, release. The White House also released a statement attributed to Kelly in which he renewed his denial of ever calling Trump an "idiot".

The affidavit includes new details into the methods used in the Sony Pictures attack, including spear phishing messages sent to Sony Pictures employees and "actors and other personnel associated with the movie 'The Interview, '" starting in September of 2014. They also destroyed much of Sony's computer infrastructure.

Officials say Park at times traveled to neighboring China and conducted work under a front company called Chosun Expo.

Thursday's announcement marks the first time USA prosecutors have brought criminal charges against an official associated with the Sony breach and other attacks, with the DOJ targeting North Korean computer programmer Park Jin Hyok.

Park Jin Hyok is said to be linked to the Lazarus Group.

The Treasury announcement said that Park and his co-conspirators operated from "North Korea, China, and elsewhere to perpetrate these malicious activities".
