Ex-Trump campaign adviser sentenced to 14 days in prison

"I made a awful mistake but I am a good man".

The defendant, George Papadopoulos, a one-time up-and-comer from Chicago who served as a foreign policy adviser on Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, pleaded guilty last October to making a false statement when the Federal Bureau of Investigation interviewed him in January 2017.

Papadopoulos, the first campaign aide sentenced in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation, had said he was "deeply embarrassed" and acknowledged that his actions could have hindered the FBI agents' work.

He then pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the his contacts with Joseph Mifsud, a London-based professor with connections to high-ranking Russian officials, who told him in late April 2016 that Russians had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.

Papadopoulos was pictured in March 2016 sitting at a table with Trump, then-campaign adviser Jeff Sessions who went on to become US attorney general, and other foreign policy campaign advisers. He hasn't returned since.

"I made a bad mistake", Papadopoulos told the judge.

He said in court that his "entire life has been turned upside down" and he hoped "for a second chance to redeem myself".

"14 days for $28 MILLION - $2 MILLION a day, No Collusion", the president tweeted.

U.S. investigators were only alerted to Papadopoulos's activities in mid-2016 after he told Australia's ambassador to London, Alexander Downer, about his talks with Mifsud during a late-night drinking session in a London pub. He also gave Papadopoulos a year of supervision, 200 hours of community service, and fined him $9,500 (Rs 6,85,000).

Papadopoulos has never publicly named those within the Trump campaign he told about the offer of emails from the professor, but he has said he was in regular touch with campaign chairman Paul Manafort, campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and other top campaign officials.

He was the first to plead guilty in Mueller's probe while his case was also the first to detail a member of the Trump campaign having knowledge of Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election while it was ongoing.

Papadopoulos admitted that he lied to FBI investigators when they interviewed him on January 27, 2017.

Huckabee on Woodward's Book: Only a 'Gutless Coward' Uses Anonymous Sources
At one point during the call, Trump put Conway on the phone, who admits that she "put in" Woodward's request but it was rejected. This is the worst job I've had". "This is a pathetic attempt to smear people close to President Trump".

He was the first ex-Trump aide arrested in the probe into an alleged Kremlin plot to sway the 2016 United States vote.

In a court filing, lawyers for Papadopoulos had argued for probation, saying he was "ashamed and remorseful" but wasn't trying to undermine the Russian Federation probe when he was "caught off-guard by an impromptu interrogation".

Moss said that while Papadopoulos lied for selfish reasons and did real harm to the government's efforts to carry out its investigation of Russian meddling, he was moved by what he called the defendant's "genuine remorse about what he did".

His lawyers argued their client volunteered information, such as describing a March 31, 2016, meeting in which then-candidate Trump "nodded with approval" when he suggested a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and that then-Sen.

"The message is for all of us to check our loyalty, to tell the truth, to help the good guys", Breen said.
