Djokovic ready to chase Federer, Nadal

Without much trouble, Djokovic held his own and took the Championship in NY for a third time.

Novak Djokovic beat Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets Sunday to win the US Open and a historic 14th Grand Slam title.

Djokovic had lost five previous finals at Flushing Meadows, but he was determined to make amends for his lack of trophies in NY as his defensive ability combined with his ruthless prowess saw him break in the fourth game, although Del Potro was not in the mood to give up so easily as he hit straight back. The Serbian had to endure a dramatic 20-minute service game in which his opponent had three more break points but could not take them.

Since a quarterfinal exit at Roland Garros left him threatening to skip Wimbledon, he has lost just one match, claiming not only a third title at the All-England Club but also a first Cincinnati Masters title in the build-up to the US Open.

The win also marked Djokovic's 14th grand slam title, lifting him into a tie with Pete Sampras in third place on the all-time list.

Senate committee vote on Kavanaugh delayed until next week
It also would have little impact on Kavanaugh's confirmation unless two holdout Republicans - including Maine U.S. Collins votes NO on Kavanaugh and you will not be charged, and no money will go to fund her future opponent".

Only great rivals Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (17) have won more.

Del Potro said he was most proud of not giving up in pursuit of another Grand Slam final, adding: "I got it after nine years, which is unbelievable to me because the US Open is my favourite tournament and I'm proud of that". Djokovic, victor of the 2011 and 2015 Opens and a former No. 1, is on a rollicking roll in recent months, including July's Wimbledon title, since having elbow surgery in February. For Djokovic, it was an illustration of him growing into the championships as he took his run of consecutive sets won to 14, stretching back to the second round against Tennys Sandgren.

Djokovic added: "I would like to congratulate Juan Martin for what he's done in the last four, five years".

Del Potro backed Djokovic to surpass Federer's mark of 20 Slams.

On the other hand, Del Potro was relying heavily on his serves and power.

Federer lost in the fourth round in NY, while Nadal retired from his semifinal against del Potro because of a bad right knee. The victory Sunday comes a year after Djokovic sat out the tournament at Flushing Meadows because of an injured right elbow that eventually required surgery.

Djokovic's most hard opponent this tournament has been the heat and humidity, so Sunday's cool and wet conditions, resulting in the roof being shut on Arthur Ashe Stadium, were perfectly to his liking. Not against Djokovic, who always seemed to have all the answers.

Statistically, the men's final was relatively even. Del Potro would not rue how many of those could have been his had he been injury-free all those years.

The tiebreaker was resolved thanks to more del Potro miscues on his forehand side, as he looked more and more worn out. Angelique Kerber went from No. 4 to No. 3.

"I would say last night it's unfortunate and we have to have consistency because when you look at what Serena is feeling, we watch the guys do this all the time", Adams said. Ahead 40-0 he wasn't able to capitalize on any of the three game points, then went onto make two forehand errors to surrender his serve. "I'm sad because I lose but I'm happy for Novak".
