  • White House flag returns to full-staff after McCain’s death, angering Twitter

Congressional leaders announced that McCain would lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda, though they did not give a date. Tickets are no longer available but the event will be livestreamed on McCain's website.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the flag should be flown at half-staff "at all federal buildings, grounds and naval vessels in the Washington, D.C., area on the day and day after the death of a United States senator, representative, territorial delegate, or the resident commissioner from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico". John McCain's death, President Donald Trump said he respected the senator's "service to our country" and has signed a proclamation to fly the US flag at half-staff until his burial.

Wallace then said, "I did watch some Fox News on Saturday night, and even his favorite network Fox News celebrated American hero John McCain".

A national memorial service will take place at the Washington National Cathedral where family, friends, colleagues, and political leaders will attend and honor McCain's life.

United's stand-in skipper has, however, faced criticism along with a number of team-mates after suffering a 3-2 defeat at Brighton last time out.

People close to McCain and the White House said the family had requested that Trump stay away from the week's services and ceremonies, which will culminate with McCain's burial at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Trump's Oval Office predecessors and respective McCain campaign rivals George W. Bush and Barack Obama have been asked to deliver eulogies in Washington D.C as the 81-year old's body lies in state at the U.S Capitol later this week.

"Why won't you say anything about John McCain?" asked exasperated ABC News reporter Jon Karl after repeated attempts to get the president to respond to questions about McCain's legacy throughout the day.

In more than three decades in Congress, McCain became known as a political maverick willing to stick to his convictions rather than go along with party leaders - an independent streak that has drawn a mix of respect and ire.

"He never forgot the great duty he felt to care for our nation's heroes, dedicating his spirit and energy to ensuring that no man or woman in uniform was left behind on the battlefield or once they returned home", Pelosi said in a statement.

Mr. Trump's initial silence about Mr. McCain underscored the isolation of the USA leader and fueled criticism that he is incapable of bringing a divided nation together even as it mourns a man widely seen as an American hero and a political icon.
