USA mid-term elections: Trump claims win in key OH vote

The New York Times gave Mr Balderson 50.2%, a lead of 1,754 votes in the 12th Congressional District race, with all precincts reporting.

The BBC correspondent in Washington says even if the Democrats lose the seat, they can claim a moral victory in OH, and will point to the results as further evidence that they are poised for success in November.

Democrats need a net gain of 23 seats to take control of the House, and Republicans are now defending dozens of districts that are more favorable to Democrats than Ohio's 12th District, which Trump in 2016 and Mitt Romney in 2012 both won by 11 percentage points.

The best barometer for November's midterm elections came in OH, where the contest in a congressional district near Columbus that Republicans have held for three decades was too close to call.

For Republicans, it was costly: The Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC and the National Republican Congressional Committee, the House GOP's campaign arm, poured a combined total of more than $5 million into the race, compared to just $1 million from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. It was also a sign that the party's strategy for the race - fully embracing President Donald Trump and his bombastic message in hopes of motivating Republican voters, rather than trying to soothe moderates' worries about the President - could backfire in similar districts in November's midterm elections. Trump's tweet backing Georgia Republican governor hopeful Brian Kemp vaulted him to an easy primary runoff win two weeks ago.

Chinese state media accuses Donald Trump of "deceitful drama" in trade spat
Much of the trade war with allies is really about US domestic politics and the upcoming US November midterm elections. Mnuchin is more in favour of coming to an agreement that would bring about a reduction in the United States deficit.

Though they united to defeat a common enemy, Kasich's opposition to Trump came up in the final days of the race.

However, Tiberi resigned before finishing his term, forcing the special election to replace him. The victor will complete the four and a half months left in Mr. Tiberi's term, and both candidates will run again on November 6 for a complete two-year term. He will face incumbent Democratic Sen.

In Ohio, the script for the special election was somewhat familiar: An experienced Trump loyalist, Balderson, was fighting a strong challenge from O'Connor, a fresh-faced Democrat, in a congressional district held by the Republican Party for more than three decades.

The victor takes the seat previously held by Pat Tiberi, a nine-term incumbent who resigned to take a job with an OH business group. There were at least 3,367 provisional ballots left to be reviewed. "Congratulations to a future STAR of the Republican Party, future Senator John James", Trump tweeted.

Michigan, Missouri, Kansas and Washington held primaries on Tuesday, setting the stage for a number of competitive congressional and governor's races in November. "In a race the pundits say we had no business being in, you proved them wrong". But then Mr. Kasich, Mr. Trump's last standing foe in the 2016 GOP presidential primaries, suggested on ABC's This Week on Sunday that Mr. Trump's Saturday appearance in Delaware County may have hurt the candidate more than it helped.

Employment overall lags, while trucking adds 4400 jobs in July
Utilities employment fell for a third straight month and the finance and insurance industry shed 9,400 jobs last month. Over the past year, it has hired more than a half-million Americans and stands as the leading job-creating sector.

Indeed, Ms Whitmer could lead an all-female Democratic state-wide ticket in MI against Mr Schuette.

The victorious incumbent congressman had to fund a campaign to spell out which candidate was which.

The winning Ron Estes took about 80% of the vote and will take on Democrat James Thompson, a supporter of Bernie Sanders in November.

The Democrats need to pick up 23 seats in the House to gain a majority.

In Michigan, three mainstream Democrats in suburban Detroit were among those vying for a chance at retiring Republican Rep. Dave Trott's seat in November.

President claims ID is needed to buy groceries
Trump's weird and inaccurate claims in support of the laws certainly won't help win much additional support on the issue. President Donald Trump is calling the conservative Koch brothers "a total joke in real Republican circles".
