  • Zimbabwe election results Could the opposition party win

The ruling ZANU-PF won 109 seats while the main opposition MDC party had 41 in the country's 210-seat House of Assembly.

On Wednesday, not long after Zimbabwe's electoral commission announced that the ruling party was on course for a landslide win in parliamentary elections, opposition protesters marched to the commission's headquarters in the capital, Harare.

Three people died from confrontation between the army and MDC Alliance supporters demanding their candidate be declared victor.

Voters in Zimbabwe traditionally pick a presidential candidate based on their party affiliation and the trend in the parliamentary election was expected to continue when results for the president are announced this week.

MDC members did not take the latest poll results well, as they went on a rampage outside the ZEC at the International Conference Centre in Harare, burning tyres.

This set the stage for President Emmerson Mnangagwa's victory.

Zimbabwe soldiers clash with opposition supporters as ruling party wins majority
The party now has an unassailable majority at 109 seats, while MDC-Alliance has 41, NPF has one seat and one independent. The police deployed 71‚000 officers countrywide ahead of the high stakes elections held on Monday.

Zimbabwean soldiers appeared on streets of Harare on Wednesday, jumping out of several armoured vehicles to disperse opposition supporters after they clashed with police, footage broadcast by eNCA television showed.

European Union observers voiced concern about delays in releasing the results of the presidential contest, a two-horse race between Chamisa and Mnangagwa, head of the ruling ZANU-PF party.

She added that the United Kingdom was monitoring the situation closely and further advised British nationals in Harare to check the latest travel advisory issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Mr. Mnangagwa had tweeted Tuesday morning that reports from his own party representatives were "extremely positive".

"I will stay here until Chamisa is president", said Amandishe Muzhinji, who traveled back from Swaziland where he works as a migrant laborer to vote in Monday's election. "We won the popular vote (and) will defend it", Chamisa wrote on Twitter.

Vote counting began at polling stations across the country after polls closed Monday evening.

US officials have said Russian interfered in the 2016 election, and McConnell says he thinks the Russians will try again in 2018. He says she refused to do that and stayed "despite staff, Secret Service, everyone trying to usher everyone out of the room".

Priscilla Chigumba, a judge who heads the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, said she was confident there had been no "cheating" in the first election without Mugabe on the ballot. "The strategy is meant to prepare Zimbabwe mentally to accept fake presidential results".

However, Douglas Mwonzora, a top MDC Alliance official, told the BBC's Andrew Harding that the endorsement on Sunday of their candidate by Mr Mugabe had cost the party votes.

The opposition has spoken of vote-rigging, saying results were not posted outside a fifth of the country's almost 11,000 polling stations.

The most important thing for us now is to move beyond yesterday's tragic events, and to move forward, together.I am therefore calling for an independent investigation into what occurred in Harare yesterday. Zimbabwe is on edge awaiting the results of its historic presidential election after troops opened fire on protests against alleged electoral fraud, denting hopes of a new era for the country following the ousting of Robert Mugabe.

The BBC reports that the announcement on the presidential poll was not made because representatives of some of the 23 candidates had failed to turn up to verify the results.
