On July 31, 2018, robbers stole two crowns worn by King Charles IX and his wife Queen Christina from a Swedish cathedral.

It sparked a police search of the lake involving boats and helicopters, but they were unable to locate the thieves.

Tom Rowell, a visitor who was eating lunch outside, said he saw two men running from the cathedral toward a small nearby jetty where a motorboat was moored.

The royal regalia were originally buried with the couple but were later exhumed and put on display.

Christofer Lundgren, dean of the cathedral, said: 'This is part of the national cultural heritage - this is a theft from Swedish society'.

The thieves, who have not been identified, and the jewels are being sought internationally via Interpol, Swedish police spokesman Stefan Dangardt said, noting the objects were a "national treasure" and would likely be "very hard to sell".

The witness claims he knew something was up because of the way "they were behaving".

Thieves have made off with priceless Swedish crown jewels, in a daring heist reminiscent of a Hollywood movie.

"We are on land, in the water and in the air", a police spokesperson told the Sydney Morning Herald.

He added: "We contacted the police and they told us they had taken something from the cathedral".

'We have some different information about how exactly the boat looked.

The items are priceless and police said they would be hard to sell on the open market.

'I think it's terrible, it's despicable that people would steal from a holy building and take something of historic and monetary value.

Nobody was hurt during the raid.
