A Colorado police officer fatally shot a man minutes after the man killed someone who broke into his home, authorities said.

One of those calls was from a woman from the home who said a man was breaking into her house. As soon as he entered the house, they found "very chaotic and violent scene", according to the statement. A man driving a stolen truck was shot dead after he rammed several police cruisers, the Denver Post reported.

The man, later determined to be the homeowner, was transported to the hospital, where he died from his wounds. They heard gun shots and confronted an armed man, who officers shot and killed.

Police said that a child injured by the intruder was brought to the hospital. The department did not say whether the victim was killed by police inside or outside his home, or if he tried to identify himself as a resident before police shot him.

"This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved", said Metz in a statement. "We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time", Metz said.

The officer involved was placed on administrative reassignment with pay, per the department's policy.

KDVR reports police were called to a home early Monday morning after receiving a call about an intruder. "He's very friendly. Every time we've seen him, he'd wave", the resident's neighbor said.

Aurora Police Chief Nicholas Metz has disclosed some limited information in connection with the incident.

Aurora police received multiple calls about a break-in at the suburban Denver home at about 1.30am on Monday.

Aurora police and the Adams County District Attorney have refused to answer follow-up questions about the incident, saying it could harm the ongoing investigation.

The shooting marked the second deadly encounter involving Aurora police in three days.
