At least 11 dead in violent weekend of shootings in Chicago

"It's one of our most violent weekends, there's no question about that", police spokesman Tom Ahern said during the news conference.

"I'm exhausted of it, everyone in this city is exhausted of it", police superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

In all, over the weekend, there were 33 shooting incidents.

At one point, 40 people were shot in the span of seven hours, according to a tally compiled by the Chicago Tribune, with bystanders as well as alleged gang members among the casualties.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly vowed to intervene in Chicago, and previous year he said that crime and killings had reached "epidemic proportions" in the city.

"We have really good leads on quite a few of them, but we haven't made any physical arrests", he said.
