Trump allies move to impeach Rod Rosenstein

  • Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein looks likely to keep his job though he will also likely continue to endure political attacks from supporters of President Trump

Even under subpoena, the Deputy Attorney General has refused to produce necessary documents, because they implicate top Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials, including himself.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will not be impeached by the Republican party, at least not right now. "I don't think this rises to high crimes and misdemeanors; that's a very high standard". Gowdy, who is opposed to trying to impeach Rosenstein, told reporters afterward that he thought the meeting had been productive "because we're making progress towards compliance".

Meadows said under Rosenstein's direction "the agency has made every effort to obstruct legitimate attempts of Congressional oversight". "There is vanishingly little chance that House leadership will let this toxic nonsense advance - Speaker Paul Ryan already has publicly smacked down the effort - and zero chance that the motion could amass anywhere close to the two-thirds support required for the Senate to actually remove Rosenstein." .

Yesterday, The New York Times reported that among other things, Mueller is scrutinizing Trump's twitter feed - particularly those that seem to threaten Sessions and former FBI Director James Comey - as potential evidence of obstruction of justice.

Rosenstein was appointed by Trump, but the Republican president has repeatedly criticised him on Twitter for his oversight of the Russian Federation probe, which he calls a witch hunt.

"It is a panicked and risky attempt to undermine an ongoing criminal investigation in an effort to protect President Trump as the walls are closing in around him and his associates", the statement read, in part.

The 11 conservatives who introduced the articles of impeachment on Wednesday represent a small but influential faction of the 236-member GOP majority. It was highly unlikely Rosenstein would have been impeached but the gesture was meant to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation which is under the supervision of Rosenstein. The Department of Justice has declined to comment.

"The DOJ is keeping information from Congress". Rosenstein has fiercely pushed back against his House Republican critics, warning in May that the Justice Department is "not going to be extorted" amid threats that he could be impeached.

Saturday, BART police found Don Stevens, 47, unconscious on the platform at the BayFair Station in San Leandro, KPIX reported . Authorities have not determined a motive for the attack and have no evidence thus far that suggest it was racially motivated.

Ross, a member of the House GOP's vote-counting team who's not running for re-election, said he can speak openly about the "heartburn" some of his colleagues feel over the assaults against Rosenstein and the Justice Department.

Later in the Fox News interview, Meadows hinted he may try to force a vote on the House floor about the articles of impeachment against Rosenstein as soon as Thursday. Besides Jordan and Meadows, it has only nine co-sponsors, and Republican leaders, including Trey Gowdy, the chairman of the oversight committee, have expressed a distinct lack of enthusiasm for the effort.

Rosenstein, the No 2 official at the Justice Department, has become a frequent punchbag for supporters of President Donald Trump for appointing Mueller to investigate whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation in his race against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

"It's an uptick in their fabulously irresponsible effort to damage the critical institutions of this country in favor of defending the president", Himes, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said. That includes four Trump campaign advisers.

Trump, Iran drama escalates -- via Twitter
Trump's claims that Iran threatens the USA are preposterous. "Empty/ridiculous USA rhetoric in response to same from Iran". The Republican leader's response was reminiscent of the belligerent tone he took with North Korea previous year .

For his part, Mr. Rosenstein has thumbed his nose at the lawmakers.
