The Toronto Star reported yesterday that Hussain worked at the same Loblaws supermarket chain as two of the shooting victims - Reese Fallon, the 18-year-old killed in the attack, and Samantha Price, who was wounded.

And then there's this: CBS News was reporting all day Tuesday that "investigators in Canada" were digging into "indications" suggesting Hussain may have visited and even expressed support for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) websites, though, the story said, there was no indication he'd been directed to carry out the attack. But Toronto Sun columnist Anthony Furey found that the family's spokesman, Mohammed Hashim, is a "driving force" behind the Muslim Brotherhood-linked National Council of Canadian Muslims and has committed himself to "framing a new narrative of Muslims in Canada" and creating a "national political movement".

Late on Tuesday, authorities identified the 10-year-old girl who was slain as Julianna Kozis of Markham, Ontario.

There has been no explanation for the knife attack, and the police are still seeking a motive for Hussain's rampage.

"While we did our best to seek help for him throughout his life of struggle and pain, we could never imagine that this would be his devastating and destructive end", the family said.

Saunders said in a statement that all areas of the Toronto Police Service have been involved in the investigation and they have received assistance from law enforcement partners at every level. Neighbours and friends described him as quiet but mild-mannered and always polite. "I can't put two and two together".

Toronto has been rattled by a string of violent incidents this year.

The year started with the arrest of alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur, now charged with the deaths of eight men, and the high-profile homicides of billionaires Barry and Honey Sherman.

Toronto, despite a murder rate lower than that of large USA cities, is grappling with a sharp rise in gun violence as gun deaths jumped to 26, up 53 per cent so far this year from the same period in 2017. Last month two sisters, ages five and nine, were shot while playing in a park.

The shooting has continued an ongoing debate on gun control in Canada's largest city.

Chrys Nicholas, owner of a restaurant on the main street known as The Danforth, seemed in a daze as she watched the crowd move past her business.

"Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?" he asked in an address to city councilors early on Monday.

March and others have long lobbied the city's mayor to do more, arguing that the violence in the city disproportionately affects certain neighbourhoods. "Now all of a sudden it spills into what we call "previously- thought safe spaces" and now he's acting".

Measures being considered by the city include bolstering mentoring programs, the purchase of 40 new CCTV cameras and a contentious listening technology that claims to be able to detect and report the sound of gunshots to police.

There have been 23 gun homicides in Toronto in 2018. See them all below. "They're the people who are in possession of the information that would lead to any conclusions".

"We were so used to living in a city where these things didn't happen", the Toronto mayor said.
