The cereal is the likely source of the salmonella outbreak, the CDC said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration joined the CDC in issuing the warning. "Additionally, the public is urged to report any product being offered for sale to the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator in their region". Though the recall covers cereal with a best-by date of June 14, 2018, through June 14, 2019, the agency is recommending people avoid the cereal altogether. "The FDA has learned that some retailers are still selling this product".

But efforts to recall the product were not successful.

One hundred people are confirmed with infections from Salmonella Mbandaka, with 30 having been admitted to hospitals, according to the Centers for Disease and Prevention.

The agency says it found salmonella in samples of Honey Smacks, which has been subject to a voluntary recall by Kellogg since mid-June. The CDC now advises that anyone who has purchased the cereal return it for a refund or throw it out completely regardless of an expiration date.

The company has recalled the cereal, and consumers and retailers are being advised to get rid of it.

Two people in Kentucky have become ill with this strain of Salmonella.

Symptoms usually begin within a week after exposure to the bacteria.
